The Unsighted Reciter

Severely Sheep Impaired an artwork collaboration

By John Darker and David Johnson

Severely Sheep Impaired is an accessible art collaboration between artist David Johnson and writer John Darker, bringing together poetry, sculpture, photography, tactile imagery and audio description. Inspired by Darker’s humorous yet thought-provoking poem of the same name, the project explores themes of accessibility, inclusion and human behaviour while asking how art itself can be experienced in more accessible ways.

The Unsighted Reciter is standing against a plain light lilac background. He is smiling with a friendly, open-mouthed smile. He has light skin and a short grey beard. He is wearing a flat cap in a green and grey check pattern, small oval, amber-tinted glasses, and a purple blazer. Under the blazer, there is a formal white shirt and a patterned tie in shades of blue with a feathery swirl design. Both hands are clasped together at chest height around the handle of a long white mobility cane with a red grip and which extends downward.

Through a combination of visual, tactile and audio elements, the collaboration invites audiences to engage with the poem beyond the written page and demonstrates how an artwork can be created to offer meaningful experiences for both sighted and blind or visually impaired audiences.

The project is currently a work in progress, with the artwork and its accessible elements continuing to develop as the collaboration evolves. Further updates, images and insights will be shared as the project progresses, so watch this space to follow Severely Sheep Impaired as it takes shape.
